Vancouver Hawks Field Hockey Club

Located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the Vancouver Hawks Hockey Club has been operating since 1895 as one of the oldest and largest hockey clubs in Canada. The club offers sports opportunities for all age groups and skill levels, offering a variety of programs for players from 4 to 18 years of age. Youth programs include spring, fall, summer camps and winter academies that help develop players’ technical and tactical skills. At the adult level, the club has 13 men’s and women’s teams that compete in various Vancouver leagues, with many of its members invited to national teams. Educational programs are also held in elementary schools to introduce and motivate children to hockey. The Vancouver Hawks promote hockey as an engaging and inclusive sport, with an emphasis on quality education, program diversity and individual development.



Programs & Activities

1. Youth Programs (U5–U18): Spring Youth: Focuses on skill development, social connections, and enjoyment of the game. The program is run primarily by volunteers and serves approximately 1,000 athletes ages 3–18.


2. Specialized Youth Programs:

  • Specialized Skills: Training focused on specific game skills.
  • Goalkeeping Skills: Specific training for goalies.
  • Winter Academy: Winter training programs.
  • Summer Camps: Summer training programs for all age groups.
  • Spring Elite Teams (SET): A high-performance program for female players that includes U12, U14, U16, and U18 teams. The program includes regular training and championships.
  • Winter Indoor Programs: Held at various sports venues for U15 and U18 girls. The programs include weekly training and participation in indoor tournaments.


3. Adult Skills Programs:

  • General Skills: Technical and tactical training for all players.
  • Specialized Skills: Training focused on specific game skills.
  • Goalkeeping Skills: Specific training for goalies.
  • Seasonal Programs: Programs for different seasons of the year.
  • Hockey Masters Program: A program for adult players over the age of 35. This program includes regular training and friendly matches.
  • Summer Programs: Open training sessions during the summer for all players.
  • Winter Indoor Programs: Held for all adult players at various gyms. These programs include weekly training and participation in indoor tournaments.


4. Competitive Leagues

  • Vancouver Men’s Hockey League (VMHL): Includes various men’s teams competing at various levels.
  • Vancouver Women’s Hockey League (VWFHL): Includes various women’s teams competing at various levels.


5. School Programs

  • "This is Hockey" Program: A free, week-long program to introduce hockey to elementary school students (K–7). All equipment is provided by the club and is held in school gyms.


6. Coach and Referee Training

Coach Training: Programs to train coaches in a variety of areas, including practice design, fundamental skills, and coaching philosophy.

Referee Training: Programs to train referees from beginner to advanced levels. These programs include online courses and field evaluations.

Can my child who is new to hockey participate in club programs?

Yes, new players are welcome every season. Spring, in particular, is a great opportunity to learn and develop skills in a friendly and fun environment.


How are teams formed?

The focus of the Spring program is on skill development, teamwork, and building social connections. Teams are formed with team cohesion and a balance between new and experienced players in mind.
