Pro Shop

The Pro Shop is located in the sports center and sells hockey and skating equipment, as well as services such as skate rentals and sharpening. The complex has three ice rinks: Thunderbird Arena, Father David Bauer Arena and Protrans Arena. These rinks offer activities such as public skating, figure skating, drop-in hockey, family hockey and Stick & Puck practices. To attend these sessions, participants must first register and check in at the Pro Shop, and players under the age of 17 need parental consent. The Pro Shop plays an important role in facilitating the activities and offers a comprehensive range of facilities and support, especially for skating and hockey enthusiasts.

Programs & Activities

1. Youth Ice – Fall (Fall | Youth Ice), offers classes for beginners to advanced juniors that teach basic hockey skills such as skating, shooting, passing and ball control.
2. The UBC Junior Thunderbirds is a summer hockey development program (approximately April to mid-June) that focuses on skill development, small-sided games and structure training; participants must have previous experience at the rep hockey level.
3. The Thunderbird Adult Hockey League (TAHL), the official adult hockey league, has a spring (e.g., May 6 to July 31, 2025) and winter (September 2024 to April 2025) season, featuring regular season, playoffs and multiple skill levels.
4. Drop-in Hockey & Skating sessions include a variety of drop-in programs: general skating, figure skating, drop-in hockey, family hockey and Stick & Puck; Participants can register online or in person if capacity permits.
5. In addition to the above, Adult Ice – Fall Line (Fall | Adult Ice) are fun learning-to-skate classes designed for adults at all levels — from beginner to advanced.

Key Features & Amenities

• The facility has three separate ice rinks.
• There are a total of 13 locker rooms in the complex; it also includes 6 referee/coach rooms.
• A 1,600-space multi-storey car park is located directly in front of the complex (Thunderbird Parkade). Another 1,000-space car park is located a few minutes north of the complex.
• 350 surface parking spaces are located behind the complex (B1) and metered parking is available on surrounding streets. UBC operates a license plate payment system.
• The Pro Shop offers services such as skate and helmet rentals and skate sharpening.
• Thunderbird Arena has 5004 permanent seats and can be expanded to a total capacity of 7,000 for special events such as concerts or sports events, and Father David Bauer Arena: approximately 900 permanent seats.

How To Book

Here’s how to reserve the Pro Shop and Ice Skating Rink at UBC Recreation: First, go to the Ice at UBC Recreation page and click on the Drop-in Ice or Leagues & Programs section. Then, select the type of activity you want to attend, such as Public Skating, Hockey, Stick & Puck, or Instructional Classes. To attend, you must create a UBC Recreation account and log in so you can reserve your time and level. After selecting a time and program, click Reserve / Register and complete your payment or registration confirmation information. Finally, you will be emailed a reservation confirmation and can attend at the designated time by visiting the Pro Shop or the rink entrance.
