Urban Recreation
Urban Rec is a Canadian recreational and sports organization that organizes coed leagues for adults with a focus on fun, physical activity, and social interaction. The types of sports that Urban Rec offers include: basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, dodgeball, soccer, indoor soccer, flag football, floor and field hockey, softball, pickleball, and spikeball. In soccer, leagues are usually coed soccer with a set number of players (e.g., 7-on-7 in some areas) and the ability to register as a team or as an individual for those who do not have a full team. Indoor soccer leagues are also sometimes played as 3-on-3 with a goalie, with indoor turf or arenas that are suitable for this style. Urban Rec also has rules that specify the gender mix on teams, such as the minimum number of women and men to start the lineup and continue the game, to ensure fair and participatory play.
Programs & Activities
- Basketball: Coed leagues, with teams and individual memberships. Different skill levels (recreational, intermediate, intermediate-plus) are offered in some areas.
- Beach Volleyball: Leagues with 4 or 6 players per team (coed), for warmer seasons and usually on the beach or in open fields.
- Indoor/Outdoor Volleyball: In addition to beach volleyball, there are also indoor volleyball and field volleyball in some areas.
- Floor Hockey / Ball Hockey: Games with plastic sticks, the number of players varies depending on the region and type of league. Some areas have adaptive rules.
- Outdoor / Indoor Soccer: Outdoor soccer (e.g. 7-a-side) and indoor soccer leagues are also available, usually coed.
- Flag Football: 6-player, coed leagues, usually one game per week, with simpler rules and no physical contact.
- Dodgeball: Coed league, a set number of players, with a defined gender mix, for fun and excitement.
- Softball / Slo-Pitch: Some areas offer softball / slo-pitch leagues.
